Brief Description
A service point is a geographical or virtual place which is used for an administrative, operational, commercial or technical purpose and belongs to a public transport company (as described in UIC Leaflet 920-2 in the section entitled “Railway office”).

Functional Description
The term ‘service office’ originated as a generalisation or collective term. On the one hand, it describes operating points that are located on or near the rails or public transport lines, or are closely linked to the operation of a public transport company. On the other hand, services are places that either have no direct connection with public transport lines, e.g. travel agencies, administrations, tourism organisations, or cannot be located, e.g. mobile teams.
In summary, the following differentiations apply:
- Service Points: All entries. Not all of them are relevant for the timetable publication.
- Operating points: Services relevant to operations without a commercial mandate (e.g. junctions, depots, …)
- Freight points: Services relevant to freight transport in terms of loading and unloading goods.
- Stops: Passenger transport services in terms of boarding and alighting
There are also two versions of the traffic point element (trafficPoints):
- Stop areas enables the grouping of several stop places (e.g. to form platforms) or even areas.
- Stop places are places where a means of transport can be boarded (e.g. track)
A central directory of departments is required for a timetable to be published. This directory (departmental documentation) is maintained in the atlas application (see instructions) as part of the customer information system lead (SKI) on behalf of the Federal Office of Transport (FOT).
As the system owner, SKI provides the system for data maintenance. The data owner and responsible for the correctness of the data are the respective transport companies, which are registered with the departments. Further information on atlas can be found here.
