Connection to neighbouring countries – timetable data

Brief Description

This page describes how you can connect the data and services from Switzerland’s neighbouring countries – Germany, France, Italy, Austria – to our data and services. The survey took place at the end of 2025; unless otherwise stated, the statements were valid at least at this time and may have changed since then. The data for Liechtenstein is already included in the Swiss timetables.

Functional Description

National access points

As with opentransportdata.swiss in Switzerland, there are also National Access Points (NAPs) in neighbouring countries. An overview of the NAPs (including this page) can be found here: https://napcore.eu/description-naps/national-access-point/.

At this point, we do not provide any direct download links to the individual datasets. This is an overview of which datasets are suitable for mapping international transport. The linked pages often contain useful meta-information about the datasets in question, which is helpful in assessing their quality or usefulness for a specific use case. Often the same data is offered on several platforms; we try to cite the data with the original source if possible.

The data sets may overlap with each other or with Swiss data sets.

Show transport operations

In order to obtain as holistic a picture as possible of transport in Switzerland and its border regions, the Timetable-, Real-time and forecasting-, and Incident data of the different countries. All of this is the Matching of timetable, real-time and incident data This means that the timetable data must first be merged and then updated with real-time and incident data.

Technical Description

In the following, we show which Timetable data to provide a continuous timetable, primarily for local services from Switzerland to its neighbouring countries (and regions). The ‘Badger’ tool developed/financed by opentransportdata.swiss can be used for the conversion from NeTEx to GTFS: https://github.com/MMTIS/badger

Germany (GTFS, partly NeTEx)

National – DELFI (GTFS, NeTEx)

Germany’s national target timetable is provided via DELFI (Continuous Electronic Passenger Information). This includes all modes of transport; specifically, public transport of all national systems as well as long-distance rail transport. To download, a registration with the platform is required: https://www.opendata-oepnv.de/ht/de/organisation/delfi/startseite (GTFS; >28,000 lines)

National – gtfs.de (GTFS)

gfts.de provides data sets valid for 30 days from the date of publication for long-distance, local or regional rail transport for the whole of Germany (as three separate files or all three together): https://gtfs.de/de/feeds

In addition, gtfs.de offers fee-based data sets where the selection of timetable data is only possible for a specific region/state (as well as suitable real-time data delivery): https://gtfs.de/de/services

Baden-Württemberg (GTFS)

The Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (NVBW) provides data sets for the entire federal state (also available on the open data platform MobiData BW). In addition, local transport data sets are available broken down by area or by operator, many of them with and without a route (shapes.txt): https://www.nvbw.de/open-data/fahrplandaten/fahrplandaten-nach-gebieten (Total BW or the administrative districts of Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Tübingen; GTFS; >3900 lines)

Data with course of lines (shapes.txt) for Baden-Württemberg plus a border belt around Baden-Württemberg can be obtained on the open data platform MobiData BW (‘migebiet’). Bavaria

The target timetable data for Bavaria is available as part of DELFI (see above), there is no separate data set.

France (GTFS, partly NeTEx)

In France, the data are separated by long-distance and local transport, regions and modes of transport and, in some cases, transport companies. The data are mainly available in GTFS.

National (GTFS, NeTEx)

The target timetable for the trains of the categories TGV, Intercités and TER can be obtained from the aggregated datasets available under the following link (one each for GTFS and NeTEx). Regional trains may differ slightly from any regional datasets; in the description it is recommended to use data published by regional authorities: https://transport.data.gouv.fr/datasets/horaires-sncf

Regional

In addition to the regional bus transport data listed below, there are many others with timetables for individual municipalities (‘réseau urbain’) in the respective departments. However, listing them all would go too far at this point; we limit ourselves to the coverage of regional transport (‘résau interurbain’) and local bus transport of municipalities directly on the Swiss border. In addition, we do not include data sets with major qualitative problems (e.g. outdated data). With a few exceptions, the regional data sets relate exclusively to buses.

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (GTFS)

Composite datasets are available for local and regional transport for the whole Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (including departments that do not border Switzerland). Apart from a short tourist train, all are bus lines:

In the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, there are three departments bordering Switzerland: Doubs, Jura, and Territoire de Belfort; Haute-Saône is not directly adjacent, but close to the border.

Grand Est region (GTFS)

In the Grand Est region, there is only one department, Haut-Rhin, which borders Switzerland. Data for the entire region are available at the following link: https://transport.data.gouv.fr/datasets/offre-de-transport-du-reseau-fluo-grand-est-haut-rhin-68 (GTFS; 42 lines; NeTEx available but qualitatively unsatisfactory)

The following data sets, which, in addition to buses, also contain trams (incl. tram-trains), are available for the Mulhouse conurbation:

Italy (NeTEx, GTFS)

In Italy, as in France, data is broken down by region, mode of transport and transport company; however, there is no national data set. The long-distance high-speed trains (Freccia Rossa) are missing. All data sets are only available as NeTEx or GFTS, never both.

The data is delivered in ‘Levels’. For timetables, only ‘Level 1’ is relevant and will be filtered for in the links. (Level 1 = Operating calendar, network topology and routes/lines, transport operators, operating times, access nodes to stops.)

Trentino–South Tyrol (NeTEx)

Two datasets are available here, divided into the two provinces of Bolzano-South Tyrol and Trento:

Piedmont (NeTEx)

We could not find an up-to-date data set for the Aosta Valley.

Austria (GTFS, NeTEx)

National, ÖBB (GTFS)

On the one hand, there is a national data set (GTFS) with timetables of the ÖBB, the Montafonerbahn (Vorarlberg) and the City Airport Train (connection from Vienna Airport to the city centre). However, other local transport services are not included. It is not possible to download the data via a permalink, as you have to agree to the terms of use each time you click in a checkbox: https://data.oebb.at/de/datensaetze~soll-fahrplan-gtfs~ (GTFS; 246 lines)

National – regional, mobility networks (GTFS, NeTEx)

The Austrian transport associations provide a data set ‘Fahrplandaten Eisenbahn (GTFS) – aktuell’ on mobilitaetsverbuende.at, which contains data from ÖBB (incl. ÖBB Intercitybus), the Raaberbahn, the Montafonerbahn, the Westbahn and the railways of the Austrian Society for Railway History. Registration is required to download the data.

In addition, each federal state has its own GTFS and NETEx datasets, which are provided by the regional transport networks. These, in turn, do not contain the data contained in the ÖBB national dataset.

Permalinks directly to the individual datasets are not available, you have to filter/search on the page itself. The names of the relevant data sets are as follows:

  • ‘Rail timetable data (GTFS) – current’ (GTFS; 467 lines)
  • ‘Verkehrsverbund Tirol’ (VVT): Excluding ÖBB and Westbahn (both included in the national data sets; GTFS and NeTEx; 438 lines)
  • ‘Verkehrsverbund Vorarlberg’ (VMOBIL): Excluding ÖBB and Montafonerbahn (both included in the national data sets; GTFS and NeTEx; 250 lines)

Liechtenstein (GTFS, NeTEx)

The timetable data for Liechtenstein (domestic and cross-border bus services) is included in the Swiss data sets, including local buses from Vaduz, Schaan and Balzers as well as night buses and ski buses. Rail services are only available on the Buchs–Feldkirch line, which is also included in the Swiss data. The Malbun–Sareis chairlift is also included.

The local taxi Vaduz and the Vaduzer Täli and Hochegg chairlifts are not included.

Long-distance bus providers (GTFS)

The major long-distance bus providers, which also serve Switzerland and its neighbouring countries, also publish GTFS datasets, but only for the whole of Europe, not for individual countries. In the case of Flixbus, trains are also included.
