MODI

Efficient mobility not only requires well-developed road and rail infrastructures, it also requires a smooth flow of information between infrastructure operators, transport companies, private providers and transport users.

The federal mobility data infrastructure (MODI) is intended to facilitate the exchange and networking of this data. The freely accessible data makes it possible to optimise transport services and promote innovative mobility solutions. In 2021, the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) commissioned the SKI+ office to make concrete contributions to the preparation of the mobility data infrastructure (MODI) as part of the multimodal expansion of the customer information system tasks (SKI).

SKI+

The System Tasks Customer Information Plus (SKI+) team supports the FOT in the preparatory work for the MODI and operates the open data platform Mobility Switzerland opentransportdata.swiss and the Open Journey Planner with partners/suppliers. The platform serves as Switzerland’s National Access Point and makes it possible to find and access mobility data in Switzerland. Data records and interfaces are published here. The showcases contain applications that have already been realised with the various data.

With the MODI, the federal government wants to ensure international connectivity with the EU. In addition, and with regards to the implementation of the future MODI, SKI+ is publishing uniform (interface) standards on behalf of the FOT in order to make a positive contribution towards harmonising the mobility system landscape.

FEDRO

The open data platform for mobility in Switzerland contains data on individual mobility, which will be gradually expanded. With this data, FEDRO wishes to promote the exchange and provision of traffic data between the confederation, cantons and private organizations. The platform offers the following real-time data:

Users wishing to develop applications and services on the basis of real-time traffic data thus have access to more data without having to overcome financial obstacles. We are also working on improving the information associated with these unfiltered data, to enable its use. Important additional information can be found in the cookbook we have made available, which details a large number of points on the origin and classes of data implemented. However, the measures set out in the report “Data provision and exchange for automated driving in road traffic” call for “conditional free access to data”. By default, all users can register for access limited to 6 months (260,000 per 6 months, corresponding to the real-time data update interval of 1x per minute). Once the period has elapsed, two options are available to maintain access to the data:

Setting up a data exchange
To encourage a collaborative approach, users can make their own data available on the platform. Data providers are granted partner status and unlimited access to the data.

Extended access
Users who are unable to supply and publish traffic data on the platform may extend their access by providing written justification for their use of the data. In both cases, the user should contact FEDRO at verkehrsdaten-plattform@astra.admin.ch.

SFOE

As part of the SwissEnergy programme, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) operates three applications that will run via MODI in future: the data infrastructures Ich tanke Strom and Shared Mobility as well as the environmental calculator for transport.

  • Ich tanke Strom enables non-discriminatory access to data on generally accessible charging points for electric vehicles in Switzerland. In addition to real-time availability information, the data set contains further details about the charging points.
  • The Shared Mobility data set shows the locations and availability of shared mobility services in Switzerland in real time.
  • The transport environmental calculator allows you to compare the greenhouse gas emissions, primary energy consumption and overall environmental impact of over 200 modes of transport. The tool is based on the KBOB life cycle assessment database DQRv2:2018 (based on ecoinvent data v2.2) and over 250 additional data sets specially collected by PSI.

swisstopo

The Federal Office of Topography swisstopo contributes with the Transportation network CH – the national geodata infrastructure for mobility – a central element to MODI. The Transportation network CH is a system for the spatial referencing and linking of mobility data. In its area of expertise as the federal government’s geoinformation agency, swisstopo is making a significant contribution to more efficient mobility in Switzerland. For the first time, users can combine spatial data on mobility in Switzerland and across borders in a highly automated way.
